The Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CLS) Scholarship is a scholarship for American students seeking to study foreign languages. The scholarship is provided by the U.S. Government as part of an effort to increase the number of American citizens who are proficient in foreign languages. Whether you are an undergraduate, Master’s, or Ph.D. student, you have a chance to receive this scholarship.

General information about the scholarship:

  1. Fully- funded. All program costs are covered, including: travel expenses, visa fees, room and board, entrance fees, and instruction fees. This also includes a mandatory pre-departure orientation in Washington, D.C., all necessary travel within the host country, and entrance fees for cultural activities organized by CLS.
  2. Deadline – November 15
  3. 7 to 10 week program in the following languages: Azerbaijani, Bangla/Bengali, Hindi, Indonesian, Korean, Punjabi, Turkish, Urdu, Arabic, Persian, and Chinese, Japanese, Russian.

Selection:

The selection process for this scholarship is administered by the Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC). And the scholarship awards are approved by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. To receive this scholarship, you:

  1. Must be a U.S. citizen currently enrolled in a degree-granting undergraduate or graduate program.
  2. Must be 18 by the start-date of the CLS program.
